Troubling the waters
Life’s most persistent and urgent question
is:
What are you doing for others? –Martin Luther
King, Jr.
A great man died recently, and left a legacy that would fill the Grand Canyon, at least. John Lewis, small of stature and big of heart, determined to leave the world a better place than when he arrived, reminded us all not to be afraid to get in good trouble.
What he didn’t need to say was, Get in good trouble together.
The path we journey in Life is made for companionship. When we sing, it’s the mingling of voices that raises the roof—even as that one beautiful voice rises high above (or bellows deeply below) the rest. When we weep, we find solace and healing in the arms, real or virtual, of a friend. Even when we choose time alone, the Presence of the Holy Spirit makes sure we are never truly by ourselves.
This has been a tough season. We have been told not to gather, not to hug—not to sing. We yearn for a physical touch from a friend we no longer see regularly—but we know we just can’t.
Not yet. But thank God (seriously) for the internet.
As we gather virtually, enjoy one another’s company. Laugh, cry, debate (respectfully) across the miles. Discover bonds you never realized you had. (A Facebook friend in Australia has the same cookbook I do—go figure!)
And remember to get in good
trouble. Be the change you wish to see in the world, a change so desperately
needed. A return to the lovingkindness
of old. You are loved. (Pass it on.)
Monday Are you registered to vote? Check today with a phone call or search, and be sure. Psalm 105:1-4
Tuesday Now that you’re sure you are registered . . . consider requesting a mail-in ballot. Do not be daunted by news stories. (However you do so, VOTE.) Jeremiah 15:15-21
Wednesday Pray today for children, as school resumes in many different forms. Pray for
their safety and peace of heart. Exodus
3:1-6
Thursday Now pray for teachers, including parents who’ve chosen to become their child’s
teacher. This is a challenge, no matter how wonderful the child! Psalm 1
Friday Treat yourself to a small bit of self-love, whether a special food or something
for your home. You deserve it. You are worthy, and you are loved. Romans 12:9-10
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, ask God to show you where you fit in as a “helper”
during the pandemic. Then—move your feet, whatever that looks like. You are
needed. Exodus 3:7-15
Sunday Just a reminder: Jesus regularly got in good trouble. Regularly. Commit today
to working for change where it’s needed. Romans
12:11-22
Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.
–Booker T. Washington
