Fit for Life.
Everyone needs reminders that the
fact of their being on this earth is important and that each life changes
everything. –Marge Kennedy
So . . . have you
gotten a Fitbit ®
yet?
You know—that thing
that looks a little bit like a black rubber watch, but without the watch part?
It tracks and counts your every step, reminds you to get up and move around, and
even gives you an encouraging word when it thinks you might need one. It can
help you choose wisely at dinner time and if you want, it will even allow you
to compare your fitness/ accomplishments with your friends’.
Pretty neat, huh? With
a gadget like that, what more could a person need?
There’s only one thing
I might add.
What if it could keep
track of your spiritual fitness? Give
you a nudge to pray every now and then, maybe offer you an encouraging word of
Scripture a few times a day? Help you make positive choices with your free
time—and remind you to connect with your spiritual community regularly? (After
all, we really can’t go it alone for long, without beginning to feel empty and
depleted.)
That would be a handy device to own. It would almost be as if
Someone harnessed the Holy Spirit in a wristband!
Until then—well, you’ve
always got your spiritual buddies to help you stay on track. And that’s a good,
good thing.
Monday There is an African proverb, “When you pray,
move your feet.” Take a short walk through your community. Look for signs that
God is at work. Thank God for this place you call “home.” Matthew 5:13-16
Tuesday Spend some time “sitting with” a small
passage of Scripture. Consider reading it aloud. Meditate on the words. Thank
God for the gift of his Word. Psalm 23
Wednesday Is there something you are struggling
with? Write about it. (Don’t hold back. No one will see this but you and God.)
Pray as you write. Listen and give thanks for God’s loving wisdom. 2 Corinthians 3:3
Thursday Today, try silence. Find a comfortable place
to simply still your mind and listen. Sit with open hands, palms up. Breathe
slowly and evenly. If your mind is active, focus on a word or phrase (such as
“Thank . . . you . . .”) as you breathe. Consider journaling. Zechariah 2:13
Friday Practice today the “Prayer of the Ordinary.”
As you go about life’s tasks, focus on the sights, sounds, smells and flavors
of what you are doing. Praise God for the many ways we experience Creation. Psalm 84
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, open your
eyes and see where God is at work in your life. Give thanks. Matthew 6:25-34
Sunday Join us for worship, knowing God dwells
among us, wherever we gather. Ephesians
2:19-22
I no longer want reminders of
what was, what got broken, what got lost, what got wasted. –Joan Didion
