What are you waiting for?

The waiting is the hardest part. –Tom Petty

We spend a lot of time waiting. Waiting for the coffee to finish dripping. Waiting for the light to turn green. Waiting for the next available agent. It’s inevitable, really. We cannot always be first, and if we aren’t first, we’ll have to wait.

But I think the more important thing is to ask yourself: How am I at waiting? Do I find myself getting anxious and fidgety? Am I worrying about things not going the way I really need them to go? Is my attitude rubbing off on people around me?

The best way to wait is not to worry where we are in line, or gripe about wasted time. The best way to wait—is to be right there, in the moment of waiting.

The disciples waited in fear; we wait in hope.

Why not use this waiting time to pray?

Welcome God’s presence into your heart.

Ask God to bring you into the moment.

Inquire what God would ask of you in this moment.

Thank God for wisdom, patience, humor. . . .

Take a d-e-e-e-p breath (or three). The present moment is all we have; God is waiting with you, waiting for you.

Try not to waste a moment of this precious life on worry, or fear, or anxiety. Breathe and rest. Amen.

Monday Begin this day by investing thirty minutes (or more) in reading Scripture or a devotional passage. Really sit with it. Pray, listen—and rest. Acts 9:1-6

Tuesday Just for “fun,” take a look at the stock exchange for recent weeks. Notice the ups and downs. Rest in the knowledge that your worth in God’s eyes never changes. Acts 9:8-16

Wednesday Take time today to invest $1 (or more) in someone, whether a relative, a server at a restaurant or a total stranger. In blessing another, be blessed. Acts 9:17-20

Thursday Take time today to review your budget. (Where does the money go, anyway?) Don’t be critical; simply observe where your spending money goes. Any changes your heart suggests? Psalm 30:1-7

Friday Spend thirty minutes (or more) with a child today. Listen more than you talk. Seek to be both teacher and student. Psalm 30:8-12

Saturday Today, invest in at least one hour of loving yourself, just the way you are, as beloved child of God. Has your week been its own “stock market,” with ups and downs? Whatever your lot, give thanks. Revelation 5:11-14

Sunday Celebrate! You are a child of the Most High, part of the amazing family of God. Welcome, and know that you are loved. Just because. John 21:1-19

A real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided. –Tony Robbins
