Tracking Elephants (A Summer Rerun from 2014)

There is a wonderful tale told of a man who wandered through life seeking evidence of God, in much the same way a game hunter would track animals in the jungle. He would speak with people he met, and when he encountered someone whose life seemed beautifully transformed by the presence of the Holy One, he would think to himself, “Oh, my—those are the tracks of a really BIG elephant!”

Sometimes it’s easy to see where God is at work in our own life or the life of another. Fingerprints, hoof tracks—evidence of God-- can often be easy to spot. During this holy season of Lent, it can be even easier to discern what God is up to, as the elephants seem to be bellowing aloud at times.

Other times it may seem more like we are tracking field mice, or fireflies. They move so quietly and so quickly that actually discerning their presence can be quite the challenge. But when we do, there is no doubt that the handiwork of the Divine is just as significant there, as when the hoof prints are gigantic and cavernous.

Throughout Scripture, we are reminded that the Kingdom of God is everywhere for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Take some time this week to track elephants—and fireflies.


Monday Over time, our eyes may become dulled to the beauty of the world around us. Look out a window today and spot something beautiful you have never noticed before. Give thanks. Isaiah 33:17

Tuesday So often, our words may be the only beauty in someone’s day. As you go about your daily business, pay a few sincere compliments to those whom you encounter. Philippians 2:2

Wednesday Is there someone new in your neighborhood or building? Why not introduce yourself to them. Welcome them with loving words—and perhaps an invitation to worship. 1 Chronicles 16:23-25

Thursday Many among us practice lighting a candle to offer an extra prayer for someone. If you use candles, offer a name as you light it, or offer a prayer as you light the room with the flip of a switch. 2 Samuel 22:29

Friday Gratitude is an emotion best shared with another. Name three things you are grateful for, and praise God for his generosity. Isaiah 30:18

Saturday As you pray for yourself today, seek God’s guidance in completing forgiveness of another. Rest in the freedom you receive. Matthew 10:7-8

 Sunday Enjoy this morning’s worship time. Give thanks for the many talented musicians in our midst. Ephesians 5:19-20

What are you waiting for?

  The waiting is the hardest part. –Tom Petty   We spend a lot of time waiting. Waiting for the coffee to finish dripping. Waiting for the light to turn green. Waiting for the next available agent. It’s inevitable, really. We cannot always be first, and if we aren’t first, we’ll have to wait. But I think the more important thing is to ask yourself: How am I at waiting? Do I find myself getting anxious and fidgety? Am I worrying about things not going the way I really need them to go? Is my attitude rubbing off on people around me? Don't be afraid.

But when pressed, many people, believers and non-believers alike, will admit that the one thing they fear most, at the core of their being, is death.
