When to say NO.
There is nothing worse than doing nothing and saying nothing
when your
voice is needed. –Soledad O’Brien
As a church, we are called to be open and inviting. After
all, we say, Jesus was welcoming to everyone,
and we should be, too. Many churches fly a rainbow flag out front to affirm
their commitment to being open to anyone who is curious about the One we
worship and wants to join us in our time together.
But as followers of the Christ, there are definite times we
need to Just Say No. Some things,
some behaviors are simply incompatible with the Reign of God in the world.
As our faith grows stronger, our voices should grow louder.
The things which surely break God’s heart should cause our hearts to hurt, as well; empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can
and should call these things out and work to eliminate them in our communities.
Just Say No.
No to injustice. No to discrimination based on race,
gender or any other perceived reason. No to cruelty. No to name-calling and
dehumanization of the “least” in God’s Kingdom. The list is long, and I know
you can add to it.
This week, listen for God’s voice. Experience God’s
empowerment. Give voice to the voiceless. Stand strong for Love. But stand
strong against hate.
Monday Give thanks today for those who lead our country. May they be voices of peace
amidst cacophony. Pray for their wisdom, and for peace in the world. Romans 13:3-5
Tuesday How close does God seem to you right now? Spend some time in silence today
(even just a few minutes) and seek to draw closer. Mark 1:35-39
Wednesday If you haven’t already, pray today for God to share how God would have you
subtract or add to your life in the ordinary times that lie ahead. Romans 15:5-6
Thursday Remember today a time when you were particularly aware of God’s faithful
presence in your life. (Try to think specifically). Give thanks. Psalm 85:9-13
Friday Find a way today to be a caretaker for your corner of God’s creation. Feed the
wildlife. Start some herb plants from seed. Be creative. Genesis 2:19-20
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, ask God to
show you reminders of God. They’re everywhere! Judges 6:36-40
Sunday Thank God today for the diverse voices and
ways of thinking that find their way to this church. Welcome someone to this
place in the name of Jesus. I Corinthians
1:9
The courage to say no; the courage to say
yes.
Decisions do determine destiny. –Thomas S. Monson
