Maybe next year.
You’re never guaranteed about next year. People ask what you think of
next season, you have to seize the opportunities when they’re in front of you.

My city, Cleveland, is a huge
sports town. We have professional basketball, football and baseball, and each
of those teams has a strong, hungry fan base. The Cleveland Cavaliers did
manage to “win it all,” but the others. . . .
Well, let’s just say we’ve had (more than) our share of
disappointments. The Indians almost
won the World Series last year. And the Browns. . . . Never mind. (The Browns' record continues to be perfect. 0-7.)
Maybe next year.
How often do we live out our spiritual calling the same way?
Do we dream about tomorrow while puttering around today, wishing things were
better than they are, but not doing anything about it? How do you suppose God
feels about this?
Paul reminds us that we are called to be the Hands and Feet
of Jesus until he returns (1 Corinthians
12). There are people to feed and care for, an earth to respect and
protect. So much work to do—right now.
Go ahead. Keep your sports-lovin’ heart focused on tomorrow, but get your feet
moving. The Reign of God is arriving daily. Some things just can’t wait.
Monday Pray today for children who are victims
of violence and human trafficking. Pray especially for people living in
Myanmar. How can you help? Matthew
2:16-18
Tuesday Today, look for something that’s out of place: a plant springing up in the
cracks of a sidewalk, water running out of its confines. Give thanks for God’s
“graffiti.” Matthew 13:1-9
Wednesday “Give us this day our daily
bread—enough for today.” Pause and reflect on the ways God has provided all you
need. Give thanks for God’s provision. Exodus
16
Thursday Pray today for a neighbor or coworker with whom you would like a
more authentic relationship. Give thanks for their presence in your life, and
ask God to show you how you might serve them in Christ’s name. Hebrews 13:1
Friday Our own nation stands divided in many
ways, over wages, healthcare and more. Pray, again, for healing of mind and
spirit. Galatians 3:28
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, seek a spirit of humility, civility
and grace. Thank God for his work in your heart and in your life. Psalm 139:1-6
Sunday Is there some new or different way God is calling you to serve your church
family? What’s holding you back? Pray for guidance and courage. Revelation 21:3-4
The Lord can give, and the Lord can take away. I might be herding sheep
next year. –Elvis Presley
