Ordinary Time
There is nothing so secular that it cannot be sacred,
and
that is one of the deepest messages of the Incarnation.
–Madeleine L’Engle
Christmas is over. We
have celebrated Jesus’ birth once more, journeyed to Bethlehem with shepherds to
whom angels spoke. We have followed the star with the Wise Men, arrived with
our gifts—for the Christ Child? Epiphany gives way in the church to a season
blissfully referred to as, “Ordinary Time.” From now until Ash Wednesday,
church leaders everywhere pause to catch our breath. (Or at least we try.)
But look around you.
Glance at the people you love. Take in the beauty of our snow-covered
landscape. Take a deep breath; smell that morning coffee, the fragrance of
fresh-baked cookies. Listen for the giggle of a child’s delight at a new furry
friend in her life.
There is nothing
“ordinary” about this time. Or any time.
Sometimes our ability
to see can become clouded by our past. Others’ comments or expectations may
ring loudly in our ears. Fears or finances—a myriad of things—can hinder our
ability to enjoy our ordinary, wonderful lives.
Each day this week,
consciously focus on the “now.” This may require slowing down—or even stopping.
Don’t worry. Life will go on, and you just might enjoy it more.
Monday “The news” is seldom good. So just for today, turn off the news. Disconnect,
and give yourself permission to be happy. Proverbs
15:23
Tuesday You are unique. Even if you are a twin or a triplet, there is no one exactly
like you. Praise God for this, and give yourself permission to be—you. Genesis 1:27
WednesdayWe have all made mistakes. Our judgment is not always sound. But that’s okay.
Today, try to let go of feeling guilty about things you cannot change. Remove
the words, “if only,” from your vocabulary. Deuteronomy
4:29-31
Thursday Before we can forgive one another, first we must forgive ourselves for those
things we wish we could do over. This is the day. Allow yourself to bask deeply
in God’s grace. Psalm 130
Friday Fear can lead to paralysis. The great majority of things we fear never come to
pass. Just for today, confront a single fear and ask: What is the worst that
could happen? Lay it down and walk away. Proverbs
29:25
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, listen deeply for the voice of the Almighty. Do
not allow negative self-talk to insert itself. You are a beloved child of God,
and that is enough. Matthew 3:16-17
Sunday Today, don’t worry about tomorrow. You do not need to be God. (That part is
already taken.) Rest in the promise of Life. Matthew 6:28-34
How did it get so
late so soon?
It’s night before
it’s afternoon.
December is here before it’s June.
My goodness how the
time has flewn.

late so soon? --Dr. Seuss
