Looking for that pony. . . .
There was
never a night or a problem that could defeat a sunrise or hope.
–Bernard
Williams
There’s
a story about twin boys who were as opposite as they could be. Even as a child,
one was always crying, always angry and sad. The other was the happiest, most
cheerful child one could hope for.
When
the boys were around eight years old, a curious psychologist wondered: How could two children of a single egg,
raised in the same home, become so different? He decided to try an
experiment.
He
took both boys to a barn. It was a pretty typical barn, filled with hay and the
unmistakable scent of horses—and their “byproducts.” He turned the boys loose
and told them he would return in a couple hours. Then he watched.
The
one boy immediately began crying and screaming. What have I done to deserve this? I hate this! Get me out! But the
second child? He got a big grin on his face and began running around the barn,
burrowing under the hay, searching every possible corner of the barn. The
psychologist was astonished.
After
a couple hours, he returned, and spoke with each child. The angry one continued
to be angry. (No surprise there.) But the happy child emerged, hay stuck to
his clothing and grinning ear-to-ear. His brother glared at him and asked him
why he was so happy. The child’s
answer was a life lesson:
I figured, he declared,
that with all the hay and manure in that barn—well, there had to be a pony in there someplace!
Here’s
to finding your pony—even in the midst of life’s manure.

Wednesday The middle of the week can leave us longing

Thursday Is anger a problem for you? Take time today
and name, before God, things that trigger your anger. Listen for God’s reply. John 14:27
Friday Is there someone missing from your life?
Perhaps harsh words are standing between you? Call or drop a note today. Mend
the fence. Malachi 4:1-2
Saturday As you pray for yourself today, rest in
silence. (If this is hard for you, ask yourself why.) Listen deeply for God’s
whisper of Love. John 3:13-17
Sunday Offer a smile, a loving touch, a genuine

I
believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge.
That
myth is more potent than history.
That
dreams are more powerful than facts.
That
hope always triumphs over experience.
That
laughter is the only cure for grief.
And
I believe that love is stronger than death.

Fulghum
