The last time. . . .

In my deepest, darkest moments, what really got me through was prayer. Sometimes my prayer was, “Help me.” Sometimes a prayer was, “Thank you.” What I’ve discovered is that intimate connection and communication with my creator will always get me through because I know my support, my help, is just a prayer away. –Iyanla Vanzant

When was the last time you set aside some time to spend alone with God? I’m not talking about a few fleeting seconds of pleading for a break, or a cry of desperation during a tough time. No—I mean more than a quick Thank God when something goes your way. If you have those moments regularly (and recognize them as prayer), good for you.

But God desires more. And frankly, you need more. A prayer life that consists of nibbling and noshing, and never settling down for a real meal, can leave our souls feeling malnourished and longing for more.

When was the last time? And—when will be the next time?

Spring is coming in our part of the world. The weather is warming again; trees and bushes are taking on fresh color and life. Everything seems to whisper of renewal. What about your spirit? Could you use a lift?

People often say they feel closer to God, more complete, when they are outdoors. A walk along a nature trail or a hike through the woods brings a peace they often struggle to find in their everyday, busy lives. So put it on your calendar. Make an appointment to take a serious breather—and keep that date.

When was the last time, anyway?

Monday There is an African proverb, “When you pray, move your feet.” Take a walk (even a short one) through your community. Look for signs that God is at work. Thank God for this place you call “home.” Matthew 5:13-16

Tuesday Spend some time “sitting with” a small passage of Scripture. Consider reading it aloud. Meditate on the words. Thank God for the gift of his Word. Psalm 23

Wednesday Is there something you are struggling with? Write about it. (Don’t hold back. No one sees this but you and God.) Pray as you write. Listen and give thanks for God’s loving wisdom. 2 Corinthians 3:3

Thursday Today, try silence. Find a comfortable place to simply still your mind and listen. Sit with open hands, palms up. Breathe slowly and evenly. If your mind is active, focus on a word or phrase (such as “Thank . . . you . . .”) as you breathe. Consider journaling. Zechariah 2:13

Friday Practice today the “Prayer of the Ordinary.” As you go about life’s tasks, focus on the sights, sounds, smells and flavors of what you are doing. Praise God for the many ways we experience Creation. Psalm 84

Saturday As you pray for yourself today, open your eyes and see where God is at work in your life. Give thanks. Matthew 6:25-34

Sunday Get your praise on! Join us this morning for worship, knowing God dwells among us. Ephesians 2:19-22

Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart. –Mahatma Gandhi
