Alleluia!
The thread of joy running through all things has no beginning
and no end. It winds and weaves beneath us, over us, through us, never wavering
in pursuit of God’s jubilee justice and mercy for all creation. The web it
weaves is sturdy enough to hold through the darkest nights of war and
devastation, despair and loss. Joy always makes a way. –Kayla McClurg
The third candle in our
Advent wreath symbolizes Christ our Joy. This Sunday we remember when the angel Gabriel
visited Mary and told her she would give birth to a child named Jesus. Mary
replies with a song which has come to be known as The Magnificat (Luke 1:26-55).
It can be easy to
romanticize this story, but stop and think for a moment. A young, unmarried
girl facing scandal and shame, her child’s life endangered by a power-mad king--
and all the “fully human” aspects and responsibilities of raising a child lie
ahead of her. (This is why women have nine months to prepare mentally!)
Yet through it all and
through it all, Mary’s heart remained faith-filled. The current of joy ran
deep. Mary’s trust in One much greater than she kept her strong.
Do not confuse joy with
happiness. Happiness can come and go; a deep-seated sense that all will and can
be well is the source and fruit of true joy. Linger awhile and experience God’s
loving touch on your soul—and be glad.
Monday What brings joy to your heart? To what
do you turn when you want to feel better? Find something that reminds you of
this source of joy and place it where you will see it regularly. John 16:20
Tuesday Stop and consider someone to whom you
are a light that shines. Today is a good day for a random act of kindness. (So
is tomorrow!) Galatians 5:22-23
Wednesday Give thanks today for those who provide leadership to your congregation, particularly those who teach classes. Consider sending a note or
email of thanksgiving to these people who impact your life. Romans 1:8-10
Thursday Thank God today for those who willingly share their talents with your church family,
not for their own glory or recognition, but to the glory of God. Psalm 108:1-5
Friday As we draw closer to Christmas, life can
become even more hectic. Pause. Do nothing. Rest. Allow the joy to return to
your spirit. Matthew11:28-30
Saturday Imagine the joy on a poor child’s face
upon receiving an unexpected gift. Consider making a donation to Heifer
Project, Zoe Ministry or another organization in honor of a child (of any age)
whom you love. 1 Peter 2:8-9
Sunday Every week, the musicians called by God to lead worship, whether choir, instrumentalists or praise band, spend a great deal of time in preparation. Praise God for dedicated musicians, and
thank them personally for their desire to lead us in worshipping the Lord. Psalm 95:1-7
“In the end,
it is the reality of personal relationships that saves everything."
